Test Taking Tips and Techniques

Obtaining the coveted Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Pardot certifications is no easy feat. The questions on the exam are usually situation-type questions that require more than just memorization of terms and techniques, the wording on the exams are aimed to try to confuse you, and lastly the exams cover actual experience with the platforms and not just conceptual knowledge.

With these exams, some basic test-testing techniques can be applied.

  • Eliminate Wrong Answers First
  • Read Questions and Answers in its Entirety
  • Use the “Mark to Review” button
  • Use Every Minute of your allotted time

Eliminate Wrong Answers First

Remember to eliminate wrong answers first as all the questions are multiple choice. You’ll usually have 4 multiple choice answers which gives you a 25% probability of picking the right answer. If you could eliminate just one wrong answer, then your probability jumps to 33.33%. There is usually at least one multiple choice answer that is just way too wrong to be correct. If you can eliminate two wrong choice, then you basically have a coin flip of heads or tails chance of picking the right one.

Read Questions and Answers in its Entirety

Also take your time to read through the question and answers in their entirety before answering the question. The reason for this is that a lot of the times that questions and answers are written in a way where it can be construed the wrong way. The writers of the exam questions and answers want to make sure that you absolutely understand what they’re trying to ask so if you speed through the questions, it could be interpreted the wrong way. For example, instead of calling the Content Builder tool what it is, the exam question might call it “Email Builder.” The mix-up of wording can cause you to choose the wrong answer.

Use the “Mark to Review” button

Don’t be afraid to use the “Mark to Review” button on each question that you’re unsure about. You will likely have time at the end of the exam leftover for you to go back and review those questions again. Sometimes, you may even find the answer to that particular question in another question! For example, two questions may have conflicting answers and if you know the answer to one of them, you’ll be able to go back and figure out the answer to the one you marked to review. This goes hand-in-hand with making sure you take the time to read question and answers in its entirety to catch these types of repeated questions/answers.

Use Every Minute of your allotted time

The common theme is to take your time when reading and answering questions. You are usually allotted about 90 minutes to take the exam with about 60 multiple choice questions (each exam is different but it follows a similar outline). Given those two numbers that gives you about a minute and a half to answer a question. Some questions may take you 2-3 minutes and some may take you 30 seconds. But usually that is enough time for you to slow things down and read each sentence in the question and answers to make sure you understand it. Even when you’re done with the exam and have time left over, go back and go through each question to make sure that it is correct. These exams aren’t cheap and you don’t want to have to retake them!
